Systems & Backend Engineer
Engineering distributed systems and low-latency backends.
I’m Uttam, a student at NIT Agartala building toward backend and systems engineering. Interested in Go, distributed systems, concurrency, and open-source software.
Featured Projects
Distributed systems and Go
A simplified version of Google's MapReduce implemented in Go. Demonstrates distributed task coordination, fault tolerance, and concurrency using a Coordinator–Worker architecture with RPC communication.
A distributed task scheduler engineered for delayed execution using a Scheduler, Coordinator, and Worker microservices architecture. Features gRPC heartbeats, round-robin task dispatching, and transactional state updates.
A high-performance C++20 matching engine utilizing custom memory pools and POD structs to eliminate heap allocations. Features thread-safe concurrent insertions and cancellations via read-write locking, achieving 241K ops/sec throughput with ultra-low latency.
A custom Unix shell written in C. Features a POSIX-compliant interface and supports features like process management, command execution and file system operations.
Open Source Contributions
Core observability library – Metrics utility refactors and validation
- Replaced redundant environment variable lookups with a centralized envConfig object; removed deprecated EnvironmentVariablesService.
- Enhanced Metrics utility with strict validation and warning logs for invalid or conflicting default dimensions to prevent silent bugs in shared serverless contexts.
- Added targeted unit tests covering edge cases and logging behavior; maintained 100% test coverage for the Metrics module.
Writing
Technical write-ups, deep dives, and architectural notes.
Building MapReduce from Scratch
Why naive distributed counters corrupt data, how 10-second task leases handle worker crashes, and how immutable intermediate files prevent write contention.
How React abstracts imperative DOM work via declarative components, reconciliation, and diffing algorithms with concrete examples.

Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces (OSTEP)
Deep-diving into virtualization, memory virtualization (paging & TLBs), and concurrency bugs.
Distributed Systems & Consensus
Implementing consensus algorithms (Raft) and RPC-based coordinator-worker pipelines in Go.
Low-Latency Systems in C++
Designing lock-free data structures, memory pools, and cache-friendly data layouts.
